Call to Artists for the Ludlow Fringe Art Trail
19th June – 18th July 2021
We are looking for up to 60 artists, painters, sculptors, makers, photographers, etc, to create or contribute uplifting, inspiring, artworks to be exhibited in and around the beautiful medieval town of Ludlow, and within the magical and inspiring grounds of Stokesay Court, in rural South Shropshire.
As our personal and collective creative journeys have been thrown off course or changed track wildly this year, we are inviting artists to develop work on the theme, Echoes in the Landscape, by thinking particularly about the instinctive drive to create a safe place, a community, shelter, home, nest, spiritual or natural haven. You could create works in response to these ideas or more generally to the natural space around us and our human imprint within this. You might like to think about the flora and fauna which have lifted our spirits during these difficult times, celebrating everything from the moss and fungi in the woods to the beautiful Red Kites and Buzzards above. Or you might like to think about the history of the people within the landscape, their roots, their stories, their migration from other communities and their connections across borders.
Artworks could be in the form of sculpture, site specific works, paintings, prints, textiles, stories, sound, light, installation, photography, film, performance and more and there wil be two distinct opportunities to show and sell your work this year:
- The Ludlow Fringe Art Trail, which will be taking place throughout the town and is open to all categories of visual arts and will take place in shop windows, cafes, galleries and public places.
- The Echoes in the Landscape, Sculpture Trail, taking place in the meadows, lake, gardens, and woodland areas in the magical and inspiring grounds of Stokesay Court.
We are committed to encouraging public interaction with contemporary art in a rural setting as well as creating space and opportunity for artists to experiment, show and sell their work to a diverse audience. At a time when ecological and political events in the world can feel very dark, we have an opportunity to let our imaginations and aspirations soar and to create an Art Trail that inspires visitors and artists alike.
We will invite feedback from visitors to the Trail and ask which is their favourite artwork. There will be 4 cash awards to artists – People’s Choice 1st £250, 2nd £200, 3rd £150. Curator’s Choice £250. These will be announced on Sunday 18th July.
We are also offering 4 commissions of £500 for emerging artists toward costs of materials and installation, available for new works made in response to the artist’s brief. Please indicate clearly in your proposal if you are applying for a commission or for the opportunity to exhibit and sell your work. If you receive a commission you will still be eligible for an award.
Submission Deadline: 25th April 2021
To submit a proposal please provide the information as set out below and email a maximum of 5 images showing examples of previous work to firstname.lastname@example.org.
If successful there will be a submission charge of £40 to cover cost of promotion and entry into the Art Trail Map/Brochure and website guide and there will be a 25% commission taken on any sales of work.
